What is Export Document Discounting?
Export document discounting (tiếng Việt: chiết khấu chứng từ xuất khẩu) is a trade finance product in which an exporter's bank advances 70–90% of the documentary value (under an L/C, D/P, or D/A collection) immediately after the exporter presents compliant shipping documents.
Process Overview
- Exporter ships goods and prepares documents per L/C terms
- Documents presented to the exporter's Vietnamese bank
- Bank checks document compliance (5–7 business days)
- Bank advances discounted proceeds (face value minus interest and fees)
- Bank forwards documents to issuing bank; collects full payment at maturity
Pricing
- Discount rate: Approx. SOFR + margin for USD transactions (~3–5%/year)
- Document handling fee: 0.1–0.25% of invoice value
- SWIFT fee: VND 500,000–1,000,000 per set
Benefits
Exporters convert 30–180-day payment terms into immediate cash flow, reducing FX exposure and enabling faster production cycles.
Illustrative Example
A Vietnamese seafood exporter shipped a $200,000 order to a buyer in the EU under a 60-day usance L/C. After presenting compliant documents, the bank advanced 85% of the value ($170,000) within 3 business days, allowing the exporter to pay suppliers and start the next production cycle without waiting for the buyer's payment at maturity.
