What is a Payment Agent?
A «Payment Agent» is a third-party intermediary authorised under a formal agency agreement to perform payment services — including accepting deposits, processing transfers, collecting bills, or distributing funds — on behalf of a bank or financial institution.
Key roles
- Collection Agent: Collects receivables on behalf of the principal
- Disbursement Agent: Distributes payments (salaries, benefits, refunds)
- Banking Correspondent: Provides basic banking services in underserved areas
- E-wallet Operator: Digital payment agents (e.g. MoMo, ZaloPay in Vietnam)
